I love making everybody jump at the covered ranges with the muzzle break on my Socom 16. That thing is LOUD! Love mine to death though!
Like others have said, the SOCOM-16, while it does take the same mags, does not have interchangeable parts with other M1As. If you want a short M1A, I'd probably go with the Scout Squad. But let me make another suggestion. If you really like the 16" barrel, check out www.shuffsparkerizing.com and look at his Mini-G. I have one, and it is the nicest rifle I've ever owned. Receiver is forged vs the cast M1A receiver and all but 3 parts are exactly the same as a Garand. Not to mention, surplus 30-06 is about 50 cents per rd from the CMP. If you just have a hard-on for .308, he can build a .308 Mini-G that takes M1A mags, as well. Here's my Mini-G in 30-06...

Now that's the ticket IMO. Sweet sweet concept.
If you want a carbine M1A, I would get one of these instead of a SOCOM: http://www.jgsales.com/springfield-armory-m1a-bush-rifle,-308,-18-barrel,-used.-p-59294.html
