I must be looking at the map wrong. Looks like there is a keystone connection to Canada already, but the XL provides a new path to bring light crude (from Montana) along with product from Canada, no?

Yes. the pipeline is already flowing oil and has been for years. The issue is Phase 4, the final phase, which replaces the smaller, longer route with a larger more direct route with 2 additional stops in the US to add their crude. The oil is already transported through the US via rail and truck, and that is the real issue here. The rail lines don't want to lose the business. It has already been proven that the risk of environmental damage is minimal.

This crude is not scheduled for China, most of it is consumed by the US already. There are millions of miles of pipeline running through the US, this is nothing new, yet they have made it a political issue.

Guess who owns those rail lines - Warren Buffet who is a major Democratic donor.

SMS the crude from Montana is light. The XL pipeline is going to transport oil from the tar sands in Canada. Tar sand oil is the heaviest of the heavy. IIRC it takes one refinement to even be able to pump it, but that makes it a very high quality crude. The second refinement is when they make actual products out of it.
