I did not expect this thread to take off in the way it has.

Personally, I'm not so worried about the political intricacies. I'm actually an anarchist, or libertarian socialist, hence the flag avatar picture. If you are some other kind of socialist that's fine for me.

After looking around I have seen a bunch of right-wing militias like the Oath Keepers, the Bundy guys, and various open carry groups. It makes me wonder why not a leftist militia?

My ideal militia is something that trains across the board for things. Radio/comms, medical, relief effort, and yes, firearms and drills. I think a really well done militia would offer courses/qualification for things like this, and also help people get officially qualified (things like getting your various levels of radio license so you can broadcast, or prep for emergency medical certifications). Then they would volunteer during local disasters to provide relief.

A local militia could also be a group that could train those wanting to learn gun safety for free. The meetings would go over many subjects even community gardens and other such activities that bolster a community's ability to be more self reliant in case of emergencies.

In my mind, the ability of people to assemble, protest, and boycott, with specific goals, and the ability to convince their fellow citizens to participate are what the Socialist Rifle Association should be about. With that in mind, I took the liberty of starting a local chapter. If all this sounds interesting to you, give the Facebook page a like, or PM me to meet up in person or ask questions.
