The gasoline vs diesel was definitely a major survival issue in combat.

Actually, gasoline fires in the Sherman were discovered to be much less common than fires started by ammunition cooking off. Once the Allies adopted wet storage of main gun rounds, the incidence of fire after an AT penetration of the armor went down considerably.

Quantity beat quality in ww2. The Russian t34 was also produced in mass quantities like the Sherman. The tiger may blow away the first 7-8 Shermans but sooner or later a Sherman will get behind a tiger and shoot the tiger in the one spot where it was vulnerable. War is not a football game, it doesn't matter how many tanks are blown away or keeping a score card, it matters which country's tanks are driving down the which country's capital city ultimately.

M4e8 was based on late 20's early 30's tech -low vel 75mm guns -tanks as scouts - fixable by farm boys and truck drivers-german tanks were swiss clocks fixable by trained techs at a depot .
