perhaps or perhaps not ... having Federal oversight is what keeps our utility bills from skyrocketing in parallel with gasoline/diesel pricing.
when a natural monopoly is present and/or cannot be avoided .. government oversight can be desirable to prevent pricing abuse we the consumer have been subject to without recourse ... like say drug prices going nuts, internet access skyrocketing, etc. etc. etc.

there is now NO federal oversight for ICANN ... which in now in control of root .. a private entity being given the keys to the kingdom for .. zero.. nada.. nothing...

They set their own rules for 18 years, man. The government said "make policies. also provide the technical implementation of whatever these policies are that you make. also, abide by your own policies, that you make."
They already admin'ed the root files. They were already in control of root.
This change to a multi-stakeholder model wasn't a giveaway at all... ICANN already ran it how they wanted.

yes but ICANN always had government oversight .. now ICANN a private entity has a monopoly for root control of the internet given to them for zero ..nada ..

after a honeymoon period .. we'll find out just how bad we the payer's of domain registrations will get tapped. there will be zero .. nada .. control of pricing .. ICANN can charge what ever they like ... just like the drug companies in America, they have the ability to charge what ever they want and they do.

it's a fact companies now depend on their websites .. to keep control of their domain names .. they will be held hostage and pay just about any amount to keep control of their domain(s).

The Government had an unnecessary procedural role in certain ICANN operations, but not oversight. Your argument would make sense in 1997...

There was never any federal control of domain pricing.

You're welcome to use any root zone you want on the Internet. In fact, there are several that already exist.

but ah .. you conveniently forget to mention ICANN holds/controls the root translation layer that hooks everything together ..
.

ICANN does nothing with alt root. As far as the "official" Internet there is only one root zone, with hundreds of root servers that share 13 IP addresses. These "rogue" alt root servers are not available to the most of the Internet and are not included in root hints.

They are available. You just have to know how to use them.

perhaps not but knowing the feds are looking over your shoulders means there was oversight in place which is now no longer there. we've all seen what happens when private entities obtains a monopoly over an entire industry and it's not pretty!

usually I don't like diving in technical details as that quickly puts most folks to zzzzz and accomplishes very little ..

yes one can use any one of the 13 root servers which are located mostly not in the USA. all DNS inquiries starts at root level which changes every 40 hours or so .. all root servers uses a compact central database maintained by ICANN, all changes previously had to be approved by the feds. this oversight is now gone .. ICANN a private entity now has root control of the internet without oversight.

which IMHO was one of the stupidest giveaways in the history of business!
