Dean was my SDA instructor at Heartland, and he voiced his opinion on open carry -- He's against it.

I understand that if you're in 7-11 and someone comes in to rob the place, with a gun on your hip you've just become target #1.

And you also may be the reason the perp does not rob the place.

Funny - I came to the forum just now to post about the guy from Heartland opposing open carry, but someone beat me to it.

I might carry openly on my hip and I might not, but I absolutely support the open carry movement because any form of restriction on firearms is unconstitutional. The Founding Fathers were explicit - the right to bear arms shall not be infringed. Making me get a license to carry a weapon, making me carry concealed, and even preventing convicted felons from owning firearms are all unconstitutional. Yes, even convicted felons deserve the right to protect themselves. If they're a threat, that's why I have my gun as well.

That's also why I support campus carry, which was discussed on FoxNews yesterday.

What I don't understand is why so many law enforcement individuals oppose more liberal gun laws.

To add to this

It seems to me, people do not support this claiming that it creates a tactical disadvantage for the person. If that is the case, then would they support a bill that prevents GED from carrying a revolver or Wall from carrying his Hi Point? Obviously carrying those firearms give them both a disadvantage in these scenarios.

.380s should be banned also because everyone knows that just pisses off a meth head.

I support it just for the fact that it should be the right of the people. At the same time it sure seems silly to assure yourself that in any situation you are going to be the 1st target for the BG's....

You're assuming only one person would be carrying openly and that the criminal actually has the intent and will to cause physical harm. Many robbers are looking for a quick heist and escape. They don't want murder on their records as well.

I AM IN NO WAY AGAINST OPEN CARRY. But, the way Senator Russell's bill is written, which he is a friend, and I like the guy, scares me... And i told him so. As it stands, the bill will require NO training, No licenses, nothing. if you can own a gun, u can open carry. I DO NOT AGREE WITH THIS. I have seen TOO MANY IDIOTS PULL OUT LOADED GUNS AND TRY THEM IN HOLSTERS IN OUR LOCAL STORES. I suggested requiring a CCW or an all together new lic. TRAINING MUST BE A REQUIREMENT FOR OPEN CARRY. In my humble opinion.

Why the training for Oklahomas CCW permit is a joke, do you really think the training for an open carry permit is going to be any better? Not likely and why should someone have to pass a test to be able to defend themselves in public.
