Just a word of advice: Hold on to the little firecracker when you shoot .357's through it...I am starting to get some feeling back in my right arm/shoulder after several hours now! Damn! That thing kicks! Yee-Haw!

+1 on that advice. Just bought a 340 last week. Great carry gun. The Speer gold dot short barrel .357 is supposed to be easier to control for self defense.

most should be shooting +P instead of .357 in an ultralight.

that said .357 is what I carry and practice with in 340PD.
not all .357 rounds produce the same recoil.

some rounds produce recoil so fierce, it breaks the skin in web of your hand. those .357 rounds you stay away from....

another critical factor when shooting .357 in an ultralight is what type grip. preference is Crimson Trace model that covers bare metal, with a built in cushion where web of your hand sits.

CCW Federal .357 158gr Semi-wadcutter, which may not work for you.
In the process of switching to 125gr JHP

.357 along with .45acp is not ammo brand sensitive in relationship to stopping power.
most any round you can shoot accurately will do...

bottom line is you MUST consistently hit a pie plate size group or better at 10yds or you need to down grade ammo to +P.

consider upgrading your sights to Hi-Viz fiber optic sights... your groups will improve!!!

I saw your post yesterday, and was going to post, but had to wait, was doing this>>> :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Now that I can't laugh, tummy muscles really hurt, I will say this; there is something known as "diminishing returns", and this applies to these little thermonuclearabsolutionalunobtainiumsodacanpocketrockets. To me, and its only my opinion, the words light, ultralight, super ultralight, and .357magnum don't go together. You've got some major nerve bundles that traverse the web between the thumb, and index finger, then the joints in your wrist also get a good pounding, you may not hurt for long now, just wait till your older an Arthur-itis rears its ugly head. Just think back to that little firecracker you let go boom in your hand.

Agreed -100%!

My hands are very arthritic and it really hurts to let go with .357 in either my 340M&P or my 640-1. My .357 of choice is the Speer 135gr GDHP Short Barrel load but it is only marginally better than the same in .38 Special +P. I have been thinking of trying the Buffalo Bore .38 Special gas checked 158gr lead semi-WC HP but it will most likely have as much or more recoil than the GDHP .357 Mag. The manufacturer's web sites show 860fps for the GD .38; 990fps for the GD .357; and 1000 for the BB .38 (all out of short bbls) The Corbon 125 DPX is shown at 1300 fps from a 4" bbl.

I think I am only going to carry these loads in my 640-1 as it sometimes (very rarely) is a primary carry. I almost always carry my 340M&P but only for use as a last resort backing up my primary carry. I put it on in the morning and take it off at night (Kangaroo shoulder holster - can hardly tell it's there). I didn't get it for the .357 capability. I got it because of the weight and I like the sights. Frankly, since it's not a primary I usually have .38 standard velocity Fed Nyclad in my M&P. With it, I can keep all five rounds in a standard sized paper plate at 20yds. I can't come close to that with .357 or .38+P in either J frame. I'm just not fond of a J frame for primary carry because I can shoot my compact 9mm with +P GDHP so much more accurately.

Besides recoil, another advantage of a .38 is the shorter case for extraction. DPX is great ammo but very expensive and I shoot my J frames at least twice a month with carry ammo. That's just out of my price range when I can get quality ammo for considerably less. I do shoot DPX in my .44 Special as it is the only ammo I care for in that caliber. I usually practice with Blazer tho'.
