not suprising. it's funny though.... it's not like they didn't know the demand would be there. looks like they'd try to meet it as much as possible when they are at the highest retail they will be.

I decided to skip the store nightmare and order. The first one is supposed to be here next week. The second and third are supposed to be here the week after.

Wait a week and not have to deal with the horde...

Lighter than a laptop, and pretty much does everything a laptop does (at least that I need laptop to do). It does somethings better, IMO.

You didn't ask me, but I thought I would answer anyway.

I bought one while I was attending the Command and General Staff College (a year-long course). All the books were available in electronic format on the server, so I could just tote an ipad around instead of 15 lbs of books. It worked out great for that.

The schoolhouse had a free wi-fi connection, so I could also check email, browse the web (or do a search), sync my calendar, etc... I could do all that on my phone, but the ipad's bigger screen made it a lot easier.

At home, it became apparent how handy it was to have the ipad close to hand. Watching TV, and want to check OSA during a commercial? No problem. Anything you could want (as far as consuming information goes) is pretty much at your fingertips.

I got rid of that basic one and got the 3g one with the cell connection. I just spent a month in the field at Fort Polk, and aside from using it for work purposes (taking notes and having Army references on hand) the ipad let me stay in touch with family (mainly email), read books, play games, watch movies, etc... all in one little device. It's a nice toy for Soldiers, and I'll get a lot of use out of it when I go to Afghanistan this summer.

No one needs an ipad. It does fill a niche you didn't really know was there. It's a convenience more than anything, one of those things you don't know how you got along without (kind of like a microwave), once you start using it.
