The 09 and up F150's is the best riding pickup I've ever owned. The fords have the most room in the crew cabs, especially the back seats, a noticeable differance.
People need to remember that MAX towing/rating is rated for low speeds for short distances.
Get anywhere close to 10k behind a half ton is borderline insain! The frame, rear end, BRAKES, tires etc arnt made for that. Not to mention the truck itself doesn't weigh enough to control the load, high cross winds or sudden stops come to mind. The trailer/load itself can over power the truck.
Ya sure the motors now are strong enough to drag the weight behind it but the truck itself can't haul that much weight. Payload and tongue weight are also a problem, anytime you pull with the bed (5th wheel or goose) your putting weight in the bed. A 5er is usually set up to put around 25% of the weight on the truck. A 10k lb trailer that's 2500# which is over max payload for just about any 1/2 ton.
I'm not judging or knocking anyone's towing ability, especially someone with 55 years experience doing it. But the safety factors in towing seems to be something that always gets over looked, and a lot of that has to do with that "max tow rating" manufactures like to put on the brochure.
All the above is true. As I said "The only way I would go back to a 3/4 ton diesel or larger is if I was constantly towing heavy trailers (and they cannot be beat for that.) But, the Ecoboost F150 can easily handle a 5,500-6000 lb travel trailer which is what mine is. I would never pull a fiver with a 1/2 ton - many 3/4 gassers aren't up to that.
The Original Poster said: "Any reviews of any of the F-150 class trucks would be much appreciated." I was staying in that context. And, in that context, the F150 Ecoboost is top of the line.
I drive a 1 ton diesel 4x4, but if I were in the market for a 1/2 ton, I'd seriously consider a Toyota Tundra CrewMax.
I had a 2008 Tundra CrewMax 4x4 SR5 and then traded that in on a 2011 Tundra CrewMax 4x4 Platinum. Both had the 5.7 and I loved both trucks. The gas mileage on both of them ate my lunch! I usually averaged 12-13 mpg. So I sold the truck and got my car. Wasn't two months into the car and I realized I need a truck more then I thought. Anyway, the F150 is getting my attention because of the mileage claims. I will say it again, I loved my Tundras but the mpg is horrendous.
Look at residual value on a Toyota and then look at the Ford, Chevy, and Dodge trucks and that was my initial reason. My builder has all newer F250 4x4s and my 08 Tundra pulled them out of the mud and up hills during my house construction on a regular basis.I looked at getting a Tundra a few years back. What I didn't get get was why buy a truck with 1/2 ton capabilities but with 3/4 gas burner milage. So I bought a 3/4 chevy with a voted 6.0
Man I loved that truck...
