I know you have to be 21 to purchase and own a pistol, but I was wondering if he can take a pistol to the gun range if he's under 21?

Yes, he can possess. It is unlawful for any person under 18 years of age to possess any weapon, except rifles or shotguns used in education, hunting, or sport. Any firearm confiscated from a person under 18 by law enforcement upon arrest or detainment is subject to forfeiture.

My 20 yr old son's Beretta is actually owned by me. In his gun case is a letter from me that gives him permission to transport and use the firearm. When he wants to spend some time at the Heartland range, I need to go with him until his 21st birthday in November.

Not in oklahoma. At 18 you can possess, buy, own, sell, etc a handgun. You just can't buy one from an FFl.

Hi,

So, does this mean it is unlawful to teach my 8 year old son to shoot a single six revolver at the range under my direct supervision? (because it isn't a rifle or shotgun)?

Thanks,

Alan

Not at all. YOU own the gun. You transport the gun. You, a PARENT are the dierct supervisor, so the state is happy.
Range rules might vary.

My policy at IDPA matches is that minors under 18 may shoot, if a parent is present and takes responsibility as outlined above. Jay Jr first shot a match with me when he was 14, and Jay Sr, who was there, obviiusly had done a superb job teaching him safety.

What can't happen is a minor under 18 showing up at a match by himslef in a vehicle with a handgun. It is a violation of OK law for him just to drive down the road alone with the handgun.

Also, YOU can be responsible for YOUR son, but you can't bring his minor buddy to shoot at the IDPA match without a parent present. Putting a pistol in the hands of a minor uner 18 without the parent's presence and express permission opens a whole other can of legal worms.
