Thief and Liar at my Badshot Ponca City Gun Show Last week

I hate thieves and liars!

At my Ponca City Gun show last weekend a vendor asked if I would cash a check for a guy that was buying some ammo from him at the last few minutes of the gun show it was for $170.

I looked at the guy he said he was working installing windmills up in the area and he looked respectable and honest his check was in the 2,000 serial range and was from Montanta so I took him on his word and cashed his check huge mistake on my part!

Well you guessed it was a bad check and I got charged another $15 service fee thru my bank and I am out the money as of right now waiting on the check to come back to me so I can scan a copy of it and email it to the vendor he is in turn going to write me a good check to pay me back.

I thanked the vendor for making it right but still makes me madder than hell because he is out his product and we were both swindled by a thief. Lesson learned and first bad check I have ever received at any of my gun shows so far.

Did you call the PD and file a report and offer to press charges?

You might consider in future cases (if ever) to take a picture of the person passing the check along with a pic of his DL and of the check itself. Might help in recovery.

Seriously, you're not running a bank. It's a gun show. The vendor could just have easily taken the check as you. I wouldn't do that.

Does the check have contact info on it? It is worth a phone call to see if it was an honest mistake. While it is highly unlikely, the guy may just be bad at balancing checkbooks.

I've learned a couple things about taking checks. First, don't take checks. Second, if you can't abide by rule #1 make sure the bank on the check has a local branch. Third, only cash the check at the bank it originated from. If there is not enough money in the account, the bank will simply give the check back to you and you can keep trying until there is enough money in the account.

I gave up trying to read people a long time ago. I've had more than one employee who I highly regarded rob me or attempt to rob me blind. Still, it's hard to not make a sale and I'm sure that goes double for a vendor who's trying to liquidate some product at the end of a show rather than take it home. I hope it all works out somehow for you and sorry that it happened. I've been there and it sucks.

I know I really was not thinking it was pretty hectic at that point in the day. I was just helping out on my part being honest guess that sucks when you try and be honorable gee what a novel approach? As stated thou the vendor is making it right and paying me back.

I called the buyers bank in Montana they stated it was an open account but would not tell me if he gets active deposits I could care less what the deposit amounts are just that he gets money in the account they would not tell me that info. They stated I could call everyday to verify funds were in the bank I stated that does me little good if I redeposit the check and funds are not in the bank by the time it goes thru the process my bank charges me for a bogus check so no win? Also his number on his check is disconneted go fiqure. Anyways the vendor stated to me he was making it right by paying me the $170 plus the $15 charge.

Glad you are at least getting your money back. I also wonder why the vendor felt like you should cash a check for someone if he wasn't willing to take the guy's check - but maybe everyone will be OK in the end.
