The Term "Assault Rifle"

I believe the term "assault rifle" is defined in the U.S., either by law or regulation, as being capable of automatic fire, among other things. Two otherwise identical AK's, one automatic and the other semi-automatic; the first would be an assault rifle and the second would not.

I too know this as being correct. I also don't like the politics behind the assault rifle term.

I was reading somewhere else where an individual was offended that ARs were referred to as assault rifles. The same was said of AKs and the like. Personally it doesn't offend me that they are referred to that way. How do you guys feel about it?

Personally, I don't like the term being used generically.

I don't know. I just think the anti-gunners are trying too hard to lump too many types weapons into the "Assault Weapon" catagory. It doesn't diminish/ or demonize the weapon in my opinion, it just shows a lack of understanding on their part. I'm glad I have 2 of them regardless. LOL.

It makes no since to call describe something by the crime it COULD be used to commit. If I haven't assaulted anyone, it's not an assault weapon.

The first time I ever heard of the term “Assault Rifle”, I was in my dorm room at Lackland AFB Texas in 1983. I was there for three weeks of Tech School classes. I was reading SWAT Magazine. It was a special edition titled SWAT Showdown ‘83. I still have this particular magazine here with me now.

It lists the following definitions by author Chuck Taylor.

“Battle Rifle” A full powered, full sized rifle, fires from a locked breech and may or may not use a detachable box magazine and may or may not be capable of fully automatic fire.

“Assault Rifle” A carbine, firing an intermediate-powered cartridge, from a locked breech, utilizing a large capacity detachable box magazine, and MUST be selective fire.

The article goes on further to say: “This definition is not our creation. It came from the classic German criteria from which the first true assault rifles came – the MkB-42, the StG-44 (MP-44), and the StG-45.”
