270 Winchester is an American dream - make something out of nothing ... and SELL IT!!! Realistically 30-06 will do everything 270 can, and 30-06 will do it better: better bullet selection, better efficiency and more energy.
There is nothing wrong with loving "wrong" cartridge ... just don't try to rationalize it. Every year you hear that 270 is the most (or second) popular cartridge in America. And yet in the middle of the craziest ammo run in the history - 270 is still on the shelves of Walmart; either it is popular with people who don't care to shoot it much - or it is most popular only in the eyes of the writers.
I've had three 270 rifles, one of which was custom 270WSM - it was a hard (and expensive) lesson in trying to cheat the system: lesson being that 6.5mm and 7mm overlap so much (with ridicules bullet and case selection) that there is no room for a mid-step. Same goes for quarter-bore.
Here is a good read on 270 WIN: Is Jack O'connor's pet cartridge simply inaccurate?
