Three goodies of a different sort were "Fail Safe", it's more serious clone "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" and "On The Beach". Real downers.

I've seen all three, including the late-'90s TV version of Fail Safe (or would that make it four? ;) ), which was quite good. The way they shot it gave it an almost surreal feel.

And On The Beach has to be the biggest Egg McMagnum kind of story I've ever seen. Great movie, but one hell of a downer...

....there's plenty, but every one of them is pretty much propaganda in some form or another.
I like watching the documentaries (usually from 60s-70s) with WWII vets from both sides. Much more objective view, seems like the soldier in the trenches quickly forgot politics.

BTW - read Audie Murphy's book - it's a lot different than the Hollywierd movie.

A couple all-but -forgotten gems - (not tatally war flicks all, but from the '40s)

North Star (German invasion of Ukraine)
Days of Glory (Gregory Peck's first leading role, German invasion of Russia)
Mission to Moscow (this should be required viewing for every child in history class, along with contrasting fact - intro by U.S. Ambassador to USSR)
