Is the NICS check still a toll free call or did that change? The reason I am asking is I am seeing so much more of this type of listing. If that is still a free call I would rather spend the $20 in gas going to a different transfer location.

This came up when my son asked about getting a two guns shipped to his dealer and that local guy just wants $35 for transfer and $35 for the NICS fee. Not going to happen, will use a dealer from here and pay for gas first. So we looked for other dealers.

The new guy he spoke with had these fees. To be clear he was told his cost would be $80 just for transfer fees, 2 transfers, 2 NICS charges. Both guns would have shown up in the same box.

Long Gun Fee: $20.00
Hand Gun Fee: $20.00
NICS Fee: $20.00

One last thing, the item he was wanting is not sold in either place so it is not like they are losing a sale due to internet, they just lost a customer. He has money to spend and they lost out on the share they could have gotten. :)

So they're charging a separate fee to do the paperwork (4473, I assume) as well as a separate fee to make the phone call?

Sounds like they just don't like doing transfers and want to discourage people using them for such.

Find someone who does 'em for $10 (for paperwork AND phone call) like a bunch of our forum FFLs.

I feel like $20-25 is a reasonable rate. There are dealers that will do for less, but the headache of having an FFL, paying rent for a brick and mortar store, keeping up with the person's 4473 forever, etc, makes $25 pretty reasonable. $80 is crazy, though. Go somewhere else.

I don't think $20-25 is unreasonable, either. But if my local guy will do it cheaper, good on him. I usually end up spending more while I'm in there anyways, which is probably the point for cheap transfers from the dealer's perspective.

Mine charges a flat $20 to do a transfer and background unless you purchase off of him and then the background is free i see so many that is charging for the background check when its all a free service, I can understand the charge if you dont purchase from them, it is their time that you are using.

Sooner State Pawn. $10 per transaction.

Anyone charging for transfer and NICS separately is a flat out crook.
