So, I have been reloading for a while and have been giving it some thought lately....all the reloading data for .45 Colt that I have seen says max COL is 1.60". So, why when, is there a ring set close to where the cartridge mouth ends on the bullet itself? It seems this is intended for bullet depth and crimping, but in doing so, the COL will be longer than the 1.60" max....What is this ring for, if not that? Does anyone crimp in this groove? Would it hurt anything to have a slightly longer COL?
Pressure wise I wouldn't think so, pressure will actually drop from seating the bullet further out. What does the bullet's manufacturer have to say about it?

Depends on what you're shooting it in. If it's in a revolver, it might lock up the cylinder. If it's a lever action or single shot, you might could go with a longer COL..

I went long and short..some of my 45 colt loads were just barely inside the cylinder.. just enough to keep from locking it up.
I tried crimping and I tried no crimp with minimal flare that I Ironed flat with a carbide die.
I shot 200-350 gr in all configurations. Even tried my Lee cast 45acp bullets and most accurate was the 200gr tumble lube Lee.
Looking for that super sweet load.
No issues with any of them in my 45 colt Black hawk.
I even made powder puff loads that would not penetrate a stump facing you but the 1/2 soft lead would bounce off and come back about 10 feet and hit you in the leg and fall to your feet and leave a greasy spot on your jeans.
Felt like a finger flicked you.
I also had BlackHawk loads.
Give it what it wants.
Measure ID and OD of all cases and sort them to the same.
45 colt brass I found was all over the place..I could not make any ammo real accurate in that fat chambered turd.
Yea the brass after firing grew about .013" in the chambers... Ruger screwed the pooch on that one. and the pinched down barrel where it screwed into the action.

Give us the bullet information such as brand, type, and weight. When reloading it is always best to start by referencing the bullet manufactures manual.
As long as the cylinder can rotate, you can go with a longer col. It will slightly drop your fps, but you can make it up with another .5 grains of powder or use magnum primers.

I'm using Stateline 255 grain hardcast .45 Colt. I sent them a message, but haven't heard anything yet. I would insert a picture, but for some reason, add a picture from computer is jot an option. Do we have to use photobucket or something similar now for pics?
