Just after waking up this morning I heard a faint hissing sound. Didn't take long to find that it was coming from the water heater. Fortunately it must have just started leaking, so I was able to isolate the water and gas and drain the tank with minimal damage.

Now comes the fun part. Any suggestions on where to buy a new one? I seem to recall that prices jumped quite a bit here in the last few years. Also, any advice on the install? Looks pretty straightforward, but like anything else I'm sure there are a few pitfalls to avoid. Thanks!

If the heater is in an enclosed space watch the overall size of the new one. They are like refrigerators, newer ones have more insulation and the outside is much larger then an older one of the same capacity.

Good advice. The Standard tank is about 22 inches now vs. probably a 19inch that you have now. You can still get a slimmer tank that uses a different type of insulation. I bought one last Monday. I think it was 19.5 inches, but it was about $60 more. I had no choice due the space restraints.
This was a 40 gallon tank which is the most common size.

Thanks for the advice. Fortunately I have plenty of room in the closet. Ended up going to Lowe's, so now it's just a matter of figuring out which fitting I forgot to buy.

If you bought me of those energy efficient ones, you might be able to get a rebate from ONG. Check their website for details.

Yup 1st trip is to get what you thought you needed
2nd trip to get what you forgot
3rd tip to get what you really needed.

Make sure if you are using any pipe fittings. Save your self a ton of hassle and use Rector seal Thread sealant #5 or #T Plus 2 aka pipe dope. They call it that because you are a dope if you don't use it. Its worth replacing lines and any corroded fittings while your in there. It should be less than 10-15% of new water heater cost.

Don't forget the raised 18" mounting table and drip pan to bring to code if you don't have one.

What about if it’s an FVIR rated gas hot water heater? There is some debate on whether it’s required by code. They’re designed to not ignite flammable vapors. This is what I’ve read at least. I lift them up either way.

Looks like I may have successfully replaced my first water heater. There is a tiny drip on the cold water side, but I'm going to let it go for now and see if it seals itself off. I'm waiting right now for it to complete the first heating cycle, but so far so good.

Kind of off topic, but this is the first project of this kind that I've completed since my Dad passed away. I know he'd be proud, but it would have been nice to call him for advice. Thanks for the help.
