I just got a recorded call that said my Social Security Number has been CANCELLED and I need to call this number immediately (503-343-4861) or face prosecution.

It’s interesting that the area code for that number is in Oregon and the Social Security Administration Headquarters is in Maryland.

It’s obviously a scam. If it were a live person on the phone, I’d have my days entertainment pretending to be afraid and playing their game. I’m still waiting for the Sheriff and IRS to arrest me for back taxes cause I told their “investigator” I’d be waiting for them at the front door with my toothbrush.

Yeah mine got cancelled a few weeks ago. I feel like a fugitive or suntin. I got a call from a "not from this country" guy today claiming he was a debt collector. I gave him a good lashin and he told me I was being recorded and couldn't speak to him like that. I told him bout my bein American and weren't no foreigner gonna tell me jack about what I can or can't say! Specially when the foreigner rings my phone trying to shake me down. He hung up. Guess it was something I said.

All these scam calls make a lot of people nervous and the end result is that they don't even pick up the phone for legitimate calls until the recorder says something they recognize. It's a sad thing these days that there are so many people out there trying to take advantage of us but we have to stay educated and wary of incoming calls. It is good the the OP mentioned that he was called by a scammer because it alerts those of us who may be somewhat lax that scammers are still out there and they're busy.

Very true. If I’m home, I mute the TV where they can’t hear anything in the background and wait for a few seconds and see if they speak first or hang up. I think I’m going to start answering by saying “leave a message at the tone” and press a number and see what happens.
