When and if I find a bed, I’ll use a two post lift to set it in place.

I've used camper jacks. Old ones with angle iron and boat cable winch tie down

My BIL bought a short bed regular cab in 1997 when the new body came out. It was a v6 with manual. If it was wet out, you could literally run through the gears and not go anywhere

I bought the same in, I think 96 and never had an issue like that?
Straight 6, manual trans. 2 wheel drive.

That is a flatbed candidate for sure! I have been perusing around the different sale places for a Flatbed, there are quite a few for 1/2 tons out there!

Have you considered having a local vo tech welding class build you one? That used to be pretty common. Instead of a true flat bed you do low sides and 2x plank floor.
