OK Vehicle sales tax

The wife talked me into buying her a toy car. I was prepared for the excise tax, kind of it is what it is thing.

So I go to do the transfer, I'm mentally prepared for a number, it was an expensive car, so I prelubed myself before I got to the tag agent...

The girl calls my name, and tells me the damage, quite a bit higher than I expected, try to hide my shock, ask for details. Excise Tax(3.25%), check, OK Vehicle Sales Tax(1.25%), WHAT????

Turns out, in early 2017 our Law Makers slid in a nice little bump to the Vehicle taxation laws, a Sales Tax of 1.25%.

I don't have an issue with carrying my fair share, and it appears we are still lower than surrounding states, was just a bit shocked. So beware, if you haven't purchased a vehicle since 2017 you are in for a bit more on the taxes than you may have anticipated.

There is also excise tax on 4 Wheelers. I found that out when I purchased my new polaris. You go down to get the title in your name.They give you this sticker you have to attach to the vehicle. Excise tax on a 4wheeler that will never travel on the roadways. Geeeees.

Would you rather pay 8-9% sales tax? That would be the alternative.

When I was a youngster, money was tight and Oklahoma had high cost car tags so a guy I knew said to get the tag in Texas, it's cheaper and you can send it to my parent's address. Well I did just that and never got the tag. It was cheaper but found that the tag was returned to the tag agency because the address apparently didn't exist so I drove back again from OKC to Paris Texas and picked up the tag-told them I moved. I never did that again! That was in 1963...

At the same time in 2017, they passed a last minute tobacco tax. However, the tobacco tax lobby appealed it and it got overturned. There is some state law that says you cannot pass a new tax within 30 days of the closing of the legislative session.

Oklahoma city sales tax is at 8.625, know I realize that is state and city combined ........... !!

They had to add that tax because of all those who never actually pay it. You know, the ones with paper tags from a year ago.

The last time I renewed my tag there was a new Mercedes outside the tag office.I heard the tag lady tell the guy it would be a little over $6000.00 for the tag and tax.That $6000.00 he spent on the tag and tax would buy a pretty decent car.

Mine wasn't that high, but it still would have bought a decent car...
