1911 barrel

I'm not sure where to best pose this question, but anyone is welcome to weigh in!

I am building my first 1911. I have found a good quality barrel, but... it is a six inch. Can that be cut down for a five inch slide?

After having it cut and re crowned you'd be ahead to go with a 5" barrel. Unless you're getting a stupid good deal on the 6" barrel.

if the price is right buy it as your learning barrel... cause fitting barrels, lugs and bushings is an art not science... then buy a 5" with your new found skill set and be proud...

Any idea what a competent gunsmith would charge to cut the barrel down, crown it and fit it to the gun as opposed to simply fitting the 5" barrel?

over the cost of a 5" barrel install? Probably 50-100

Most any gun smith that is good enough to fit your new barrel can cut it off and crown it too.
