Is there even a question? Do you carry a purse? Can you pee standing up? Get the Thumper!

now that logic is pretty hard to argue with :D

a modern version of the .45 long colt ... uses same bullet as my .458 Quackenbush air rifle
here's a few .405 grn boolits for .458 Quackenbush with .50 grn .224 bullet for size comp

.458 socom would be extremely hard to beat for knockdown in terms of ft lb energy delivered at subsonic speeds with a can.

As a disclaimer, I'm 99% full of bull. ;) I don't own a .458 but I would choose it from the scenario you asked about. I have seriously looked at the .300blk and can't find a single compelling reason to own one short of shooting turtles. I know plenty of folks shoot them at all sorts of critters but it isn't good for any of them, in my opinion. I have to live vicariously through you jack wagons, hence, my vote for the SOCOM. Post pics when you get it!

i've been dancing around this choice for closes to 3 yrs.
my sticking points have been the lack of availability or outrageous cost of either factory loads or reloading components for the .458
and what seemed to me as a marginally better ballistics of the .300bk over .556
both seemed to be short/mid range calibers
the .458 would be my choice because of the knock down power
since i haven't decided one way or another i just by more ammo for my garand

everyone keeps saying .458 socom brass is a problem ... after digging a bit and finding lowest price for 100 rd is $78 +shipping
$370 for 500 rds .. good grief that's just for the brass ...

looks like I'd better scrounge up brass and reloading supplies before buying a .458 socom upper ...

did more digging ... about $3 per round for factory loads
starline brass for about $1 each brass only

Someone once said there's a reason the 45-70 is still popular and going strong. Okay the 458 is still a cool idea. Maybe someday I'll own one.
