I'll try to simplify it. I've always been good at doing math in my head - got a lot of bad grades on homework for not showing my work in school the "correct" way, which is why I quit doing homework in school...

48 * 0.5(9 + 3)
48 * (4.5 + 1.5)
48 * 6

48 * 0.5(9 + 3)
48 * (4.5 + 1.5)
48 * 6

Your answer is correct, but technically you would work inside the parentheses then you would have functions of equal priority thus work left to right.

48 * .5(9 + 3) = 48 * .5 * 12 = 24 * 12 = 288

If the great math thinkers were to changes the rules of the order of operations, there could be several solutions.

Perhaps 0 (zero) really doesnt represent nothing, therefore we've been wrong for using it to represent something.

Relatively speaking it doesn't always mean nothing. In heat, 0 is only nothing when speaking in terms of kelvin. Same with fields.
