Crowd gets run over by a train in India - 50 Dead

So did the conversation in the crowd go like.....hey, is that a train comin? Uh yeah, it's probably just gonna pull right up here and join us. Oh, ok, we don't need to move then.

Back in the 70's I had a real life "Join the Air Force and see the world" job,,,
I was in just about every Asian country there was,,,
India was the worst of them all.

I've never seen such apathy for human life as I saw there,,,
I once witnessed a car hit a 5-6-7 year old street kid,,,
The driver stopped to see if his car was damaged,,,
Then left the kid there to bleed to death.

I was in a van driven by an Indian government employee,,,
He wouldn't even stop to make a call to the police.

And the place stunk like an over-ripe outhouse.

Where to begin? I know that part of the world having travelled a lot there while living in an adjacent country.
Safety is not a widely held concept.
Crowds have their own strange irrational behavior - panic and people being trampled can occur in any part of the world including developed nations.
In some religious festivals, hashish candy is consumed by many participants.
Sad to say that life can be cheap in poor areas. Lest you get a distorted image - there is an educated and relatively affluent part to India. We have an abundance of very bright Indians in this country studying and working in technical fields.

I don't remember what country it was, but I saw a video once where the tracks went right through the market area of a community. As the train would be approaching, the vendors in the market would pull back the awnings that extend out over their wares and everyone would stand behind the wares so as to be missed by the train.

Found it...Bangkok, Thailand.

Ya gotta love third world public transportation!

We lose a few individuals around our hood on occasion. There used to be a bar/dance hall north of town. Patron's would get drunk and walk the RR tracks back to town so they didn't drive. Sit down to take a rest, and pass out.
Train took care of the rest.

When I was in the Army, I was stationed on a small Air Force base in Pakistan. Our small unit owned two cars that could be used by us to travel around the area to see the "great" Northwest Frontier of Pakistan. However, none of us were allowed to drive the vehicles due to the very real possibility of injuring someone and the U.S. Army having to pay out who know how much money. So, we hired Pakistani drivers to drive the cars when we wanted to go somewhere.

Its the same in every foreign country I have been to (except Europe)(and I have been to A LOT) They dont give a **** unless the person driving was an American. Then suddenly it becomes a despicable crime.
