I have 2 of the unmentioned Mossbergs 100atr rifles and these shoot awesome a few hundred rounds down both one in .243 and a 30-06
If you happen to run upon one of those cheap.. I have $250 in the 30-06 and gave a Stevens model 200 in 7-08 for the .243.

And that model 200 is an overlooked gun.. But both of the above are no longer made new that I know of.

I've had three ATR's. 06,270 and 243. every one would shoot MOA at 100. Picked two of them up at pawn shops in the $240 range

I have Ruger Americans in .243, .22-250, and a Compact .308. The .243 would make a good deer/varmint rifle and I prefer the balance and feel of a short action over the long action .270 & .25-06. Downside of the Ruger American is the magazines are a pretty cheesy and the bolt doesn't lock on safety.

Good Luck!

Ruger American bolts also known not to catch on the stop and come out of the action during normal cycling.

Xs7, 783, ATR and American are all cheap Savage knock offs, "cheap" being the key word unfortunately.

I am in need of a decent rifle for hunting deer, but I don't want to break the bank. I'm thinking something in .243, .270, or 25-06. What are you all's opinions? I've seen things like savage axis, ruger American, remington 770, etc. Any advice or suggestions are appreciated. sent from omicron persei 8.

I like the Ruger and the Savage, and I think you'll be pleased with the accuracy in them. I have a Savage M-11 in .243 and it shoots like a dream. If you could pickup a 5 yr old or older Remington 700, then I'd say go for it. They seem to have dropped the ball on quality control. My wife shoots Ruger and loves it. As far as the caliber goes, my preference would be for the .270 or .243.

If I were looking for a deer rifle in athe lower price range I would keep an eye out for a used Remington 700 or Ruger 77 - the older, the better. That's what I use - '69 vintage Ruger .308 and a '62 vintage Remington 700 carbine in 6mm.

If you would like we could go shoot at a range and i can let you shoot my 243 mossberg and the 30-06 same make and the savage 10fp .308
see if there is one you like better than the others.. just to help you along in the decision.

the Marlin xs 7 has been decent, the rem 783 looks good but havent shot one. Buddy of min got his kid a savage axis, and while it looks cheap, it shoots good, seems to work... caliber wise if you arent going after elk, just deer, then yeah .243 and on up..
