This hits a bit too close to home for me.
My Mom felt that she always had the right to "slap" us sons,,,
It didn't matter how old we were.
I was in my late 20's and a Staff Sergeant in the USAF,,,
I had just returned from a one year tour in Korea.
I used a word that my Mom didn't like,,,
That right hand came at me like a rattlesnake strike.
I had been doing 2 hours of marshal arts every day for that year,,,
it was pure reflex when my left hand went up and blocked her slap.
I didn't do anything but block the slap,,,
And I didn't do a "hard" block that would have hurt her arm.
The entire scenario only lasted for maybe 2 seconds at the most,,,
But I will never forget the look of shock/disbelief on her face.
Like I stated it was pure reflex,,,
But it was a week before she spoke to me again,,,
And even longer before my Pop deigned to speak to me about it.
Both of my younger brothers were in their 20's by then,,,
They said she never slapped them again.
I've thought about that event quite often over the years,,,
Some people say that no matter how old a man is,,,
His Mom always has the right to smack a son.
I believe that when a son (or daughter) grows into adulthood,,,
The physical aspect of disapproval should stop.
When Mom finally talked to me again she asked,,,
"Are you going to hit me every time I slap you?"
My reply was that I didn't "hit" her,,,
And I would never allow her to slap me again.
Mom never quite got over that incident.

I was sixteen years old or so and my Mother started to slap me for some reason and I grabbed her wrist to stop from being slapped. She said, "If you don't let me go, I'm going to wait until you're asleep and get you." I turned her loose and saw stars for a few minutes.
