Not really a big deal. All the gun shows have done this for years.

Not a big deal?

Maybe you should go read the bill... this won't affect gun shows in the least. Nor will it affect the large sporting events the naysayers are using as an excuse....

This affects outdoor venues in parks, recreational areas and fairgrounds but NOT the buildings on the fairgrounds. It's very simple. Gun shows and any other event inside buildings will be totally unaffected.

Seems like pointless change to legislation. Parks and fairgrounds are still exempt from bans under 1277 and 1290.22 doesn't negate that.

OK2A response from this morning. Fallin's office won't even return people's calls!

Sent my e-mails this morning and I'll be following up on them soon. If this falls on deaf ears, I'm tempted to call for a protest at the capitol and a boycott of OKC Chamber businesses. These local "movers and shakers" need to learn that they DO NOT get to trump the rights of THOUSANDS of peaceful, law-abiding carriers so that they can rake in even MORE dough.

Governor May Veto SB41

Today is Governor Fallin's last day to sign SB41 into law. We are worried she may bow to pressure from the OKC Chamber of Commerce to veto the bill. After her veto of three 2nd Amendment bills last year, we cannot take for granted that she will do the right thing and sign the bill, especially in the face of the Chamber's pressure.

Please call Governor Fallin and strongly (but politely) urge her to sign SB41 into law. You can reach the Governor at (405) 521-2342. It is critical that she hear from you TODAY. When you get through, press 2 to speak to a secretary (DO NOT press 1 for the comment line as she may not get your message in time).

SB41 was amended late in the process with language that will bring an end to cities abusing the 2nd Amendment by prohibiting the lawful and peaceful carrying of firearms during city festivals on city streets, such as was the case with the Norman Music Fest.

From the NRA

Despite public support and strong bipartisan votes in the Oklahoma House of Representatives and Senate, Governor Mary Fallin vetoed pro-gun Senate Bill 41 yesterday. The Governor caved to pressure from the Oklahoma City Chamber, which disseminated misinformation based on a flawed legal analysis. The NRA is extremely disappointed that this common sense legislation was put on the back burner in favor of drummed up fears by the Chamber.
SB 41 sought to clarify that public property (open spaces such as streets and parks) remains open to law-abiding Oklahomans with a carry permit even if that public land is currently being used for another purpose by a private entity renting the space for an event. This legislation would have provided for a necessary fix to a loophole in Oklahoma’s state firearm preemption statute. This loophole has been exploited by misguided municipalities, resulting in a ban on law-abiding citizens carrying a firearm on open areas of public land where they have a legal right to be. Senate Bill 41 passed the House by an 88 to 4 vote and the Senate by a 39 to 7 vote.

Current abuses pose a significant problem for lawful carry permit holders by creating an ever-changing patchwork of laws throughout the state with regard to firearms prohibitions on public land within a particular locality. This legislation focused on reaffirming the right of a peaceful law-abiding Oklahoman to exercise his or her basic right of self-defense where they are already legally allowed to be, no matter which private entity is leasing public land at the moment. It did not seek to expand carry into public buildings or structures.

Please contact Senate and House leadership immediately and encourage an override of the Governor’s veto and their support for restoring the provisions in SB 41 this session. Time is running out and session is drawing to a close, so your action is needed immediately!

Please also contact Governor Mary Fallin and voice your disappointment in her veto of a pro-gun, self-defense bill that would have made Oklahomans safer. Contact information for Governor Mary Fallin is provided below:

There seems to be a disconnect. When I read the final version of SB 41, I see nothing that specifically mentions streets or "public land". It merely ties 1290.22 to the existing fairground/recreational area/park exemption in 1277.

Nothing addresses the situation like we had in Norman with the music festival on a public street…unless streets fall under the above exemption…but it would address the State Fair issue we see every year.

What am I missing?
