Nice pictures! I love Great Horned Owls. We had several nesting on our property in Idaho. Got to see the new "kids" every year. It was fun.
I hear owls here almost every night sometimes quite close, but I've yet to see them.
Funny/true story about magpies: We were in hunting camp one year and had an elk hanging in camp. We had it wrapped with a cheesecloth type game bag. A bunch of damn magpies kept pecking thru the cloth to get at the elk. I finally had enough and started shooting them with a .357 I'd brought. Never bothered picking up the magpie carcasses.
A little while later a wildlife officer stoped by camp to check tags and such. He noticed the magpies (I think I'd shot 3 of 'em) and asked who shot them. I said I did and told him why. It was then the nice officer schooled me on the fact magpies are federally protected migratory birds and it was illegal to kill them in Colorado. Fortunately, when he looked at the damage they were doing to our elk (and all the magpie poop on the gamebag) he didn't cite me. I felt very lucky...
