If you get one of the new Gen4 G17s, you won't need to worry about a ported barrel. It shoots soft enough as is, and you won't have to worry about debris in the eyes or going blind. Gen4 G17 all the way.

I have read that several respected trainers say compensated pistols have no place on a self defence pistol. Best case they are more likely to rob you of your night vision. But as you move on to some more advanced stuff like shooting from retention and other akward positions, they can range from very uncomfortable to dangerous.
