There's a dark side to "Star Wars Day."
A high school in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin, near Green Bay, was evacuated on Thursday, May 4, when a parent was apparently frightened by a student dressed up as a "Star Wars" villain. Police say 911 was called to report a boy wearing body armor and carrying a backpack.
Ashwaubenon High School was put on lockdown and then evacuated Thursday morning. Another school in the area was also put on lockdown.
Police said they only found a student wearing a Darth Vader outfit with a plastic mask and a bag.
"That outfit looked like he might be wearing a bulletproof vest or a flak jacket," one police officer told reporters. "That, with wearing that mask and walking into the back door of the school, made a person very concerned. And we expect that to happen. We sure hope that people would call when this stuff takes place."
"We believe it was an innocent mistake right now."
Police Capt. Jody Crocker told the Associated Press that the parent did the right thing given the suspicious situation, and that any perceived threat -- real or otherwise -- can't be taken lightly.
According to the school district's official Facebook page, students returned to the school for AP testing after authorities determined there was no threat.
"There was no intent of a threat, but the student will be held accountable," the school said in an official statement.
"We appreciate someone, in this case a parent, reporting something suspicious looking. As the saying goes, 'If you see something, say something.' We also want you to know that our Crisis Plan, in conjunction with the cooperation of Ashwaubenon Public Safety, worked well."
According to the AP, school officials also plan to re-emphasize the district's no-costume policy.
It's believed the student was cosplaying for "Star Wars Day," which takes place on May 4 every year. The unofficial holiday is based on the movie quote "May the Force be with you," which is paraphrased to "May the Fourth be with you."
What I find irritating about this is the university president's response. Instead of saying that they were going to find out how such a stupid reaction could occur, he seems to have jumped right to the claim of racism.
