I have fished for them things a ton, never had the luck. Caught flounder, red, Jack's, rays, and bulls, but never a speck. Looking forward to it though.

We liked them better than crappie. I know that's sacreligious coming from the mouth of an okie, but its the truth.
Camping buddy that lives where we winter in South Tx has a bay boat. He goes weekly after specks, so he knows right where to go. Kind of spooky running across 2' of water that is crystal clear at 50 mph.

The specs have really picked up down there in the last few years. I think it’s due to man made reefs and such that have slowed water down which has helped underwater grass.
True. There are big projects around South Padre and Matamoras to restore the sea grass. Huge offshore artificial reef being put in just northeast of South Padre for deep water fish.
We typically found them during the tide change right where the dirty water met the clear water. Catch a wind drift in the right direction using popping corks and shrimp looking rubber baits.
My buddy that took us out is going to Colorado at the same time we are this summer. He wants to learn fly fishing, so it's payback time.

You guys are sure making me wanna go back. I haven't been in years. Come to think of it, I bet it's been 20+ years. FIL died in January of 2001, and the last time I went was some time before he passed. That's too long!

Made it back home. We caught 4 redfish, 1 flounder, one little blacktip shark, 2 stingrays, probably 40 speckled trout and 200 sand trout. I cleaned 12 specs, 1 red and 1 flounder. It was a good time and we got into those sandies a couple times where it was the type of fishing that spoils kids. It was much more catching than fishing.
