They have come about to try and prolong the life of fossil fuels so that we can find a concrete solution to our problems.

We've got one. It's just wayyy over-regulated:

Nuclear power is great but like you say its over regulated and considered "dangerous" by certain groups which is why people have turned to wind and solar power. If its good enough for naval craft i don't see why it couldn't be adapted into civilian use at a greater capacity

Edison promoted DC current till he was blue in the face, preached about how dangerous Tesla's AC current was and fought him in court for years.
But in the end, the technological superiority of AC current prevailed.

You forgot the part about the bad PR Edison received because DC current was used in the first electric chairs. Tesla supporters got up and said look at that dangerous DC current. :)

you do realize that solar energy can still be gathered when the sun is not out.

Actually solar cell plants can operate with the same efficiency 24 hrs. A German company did it recently. They used electricity off the grid to power up strong lights that generated small amounts of heavily subsidized solar electricity that was sold for profit back in to the grid.
