Don't know how to get rid of the smell of Hoppes in carpets, but did you ever find your gun?
"Oxi-Clean" available at Wal Mart. It will break down the Hoppes and get the smell out. My wife found this because I spilled Hoppes on the carpet.
Mix it about twice as strong as the directions say.

I see what you did there...guns back in the safe. Never cleaned it up, can't smell it...I'm calling this one good.
