I carried a kershaw leek for a long time before picking up a (now discontinued) RAAM. After that it was like an arms race of bigger blades.

I haven't gone too crazy. Most of my biggest blades are in the ~3.5 range. My recent pickups include the Kershaw knockout and spyderco manix 2. Both are lightweight but still have a nicely sized blade.

I think i'm settling into the 3.25 size as just about perfect for my needs. Big enough to get the job done, but not so big as to be too heavy/bulky and doesn't risk unwanted attention. Also seem to fit (or be close fitting) the legal limit in most places i go.

So what is your ideal blade length?

Been carrying one of these 3.5" for over a decade, suits me fine.

Ultra light weight and not expensive if I lose it..

I'm guessing "ideal blade length" will be much like "ideal caliber" ... to each his own. :D

I keep a Puma 4 1/4" lockblade in one of my shoulder holster mag pouches.

Otherwise, my pocket carry is usually a 3 1/8" lockblade.

I find with a 10-11" blade, I can reach most vital organs without worrying about deflection by bone.

j/k, my edc is a fraction under 4" , but it's unweildy for delicate work, so I keep a No6 Opinel handy for task work.

It was in the 60's so bear with me. A lady was attacked by her boyfriend I believe it was, and was stabbed over 50 times, and she survived. If I remember correctly, the news reports said the pen knife had a 2" blade, and it took at least a 2 3/4" to reach vital organs. Lots of water under the bridge since hearing about that incident, but it stuck in my mind, so I carry a 4" blade on a regular basis unless wearing my suit, and then I carry my grandpa's buck pen knife as a nostalgic thing. Used only for cleaning fingernails and scraping cow poop off the boots before heading into church.

Mississippi doesn't seem to have any restrictions on blade length as best i've found, but i do go onto the college campus now and then. I'm not one of those people who carry multiple blades for tasks and self defense, so having a blade that doesn't cause panic is nice.
