I don't know why folks think Texas doesn't have public hunting land?!? I live in east Texas, and there is almost 170,000 acres with in 150 miles of my house. There are some monster buck killed on public land every year too.

Because they hear it at the coffee shop. I bird hunted public land down there once. And also their wildlife dept even rents private land to open up public hunting access on it.

Isn't Ok 95% private owned. Don't remember the exact number, but that's close. We have less public ground than almost all states?

Texas has very, very little compared to all other western states. Oklahoma and Kansas have very little as well. No coffee shop...do a little research. Oklahoma has a bit more per hunter, even.

Anyways, that point was irrelevant really and I shouldn't have brought it up.

My point is I prefer the Midwestern style of big buck management, ie short gun seasons outside the rut, as opposed to the long gun seasons and antler restrictions, etc. Shoot whatever you want, but you have 2-3 weekends to do it, the young bucks won't be as stupid, and it'll be cold.

I actually agree with RidgeHunter on his idea of moving rifle season away from the rut, and I also agree the Texas comment was irrelevant to this thread. However, this is an internet chat board, and when you make glaringly false or inaccurate statements, you will most likely be called out on it.

"Glaringly" is a bit of a stretch, but whatever. 1% of the second largest state is open to public hunting. The rest of the expansive western states have 30-60%.

"no public land" was what they call hyperbole. If John and Joe are grabbing lunch, and John has $1 dollar to Joe's $40, he might say "I'll buy next time - I have no money". You could argue semantics, or accept that hyperbole is commonly used in casual conversation and move on. If a hunter says he found a "ton of deer ****" I don't assume he found 2,000lbs of deer excrement around his stand.
