Because the action of the bolt doesn’t move with the shot I think you’d have to do more like a hydraulic buffer. But a physicist, I ain’t.

There appears to be an integral muzzle brake built into the rifle or it could be worse.
The only way to tame the recoil of an M2 in a recoil gun or one with a buffer is with a massive brake that will clear the benches on both sides of the muzzle.
