The story said they were fixed to a plate, so I'd guess they're alignment pins for a mould.

There are more "when robots attack" stories toward the end of the article. The last one was about a guy who was electrocuted and thrown from his workstation and "impaled through the anus" by a four foot pole. Umm, oucho...
