rem 870 vs. moss 500

+1 for the Maverick. Maybe its not as heavy duty as the 870 but for most HD situations mine has served well. They are economical and reliable.

If you are right handed, you might try out the Mossberg Maverick 88. Pretty much the same as the 500 but with a safety on the trigger guard. $169 everyday from Academy. I had no problems with mine. Sold it because I bought a semi-auto.

I am thinking about getting an 870 or 500 for a home defense weapon. Hopefully it will never be shot. Which one would be best for throwing buckshot?

For home defense, either one would do well. It all comes back to the Ford v. Chevy selection. Do some research beforehand about what you want to load it with. I have read opinions about 00 buckshot, #4 buckshot and even birdshot.
