I got some more information on it. As others have said it is a Model 24. There is no serial number. It is 22LR over 410 (3”). It has Patent number 2259397 on the receiver. It also has “28C” in a circle on the left side of the receiver.

Just read through a doc on Savage 24 identification and here’s what will help ID the model. You’ll need to post the receiver finish, barrel length and choke, what mechanism used to switch between rifle/shotgun and also the location of the action release (if that’s what it’s called).

The C in the “28C” would make it 1951 production. (The 28 is believed to be an inspector #)

Patent 2259397 was requested in 1940 and issued in 1941. Expiring in 1958.
Below is a link to the patent for the firing pin selector device, or as most call it the side button barrel selector. The patent number only appears on the last production guns of the Stevens Model 22-410 and the first few years of the Savage Model 24.
Even if not stamped, this device was used on the Stevens Model 22-410, all of the early Savage Model 24 guns (Model 24, 24A, 24B, 24E, & 24H), and the first half of the Savage Model 24 De Luxe guns (24-DL, 24B-DL, & some 24C-DL).

I guess the guy needed some money. I told him I would get with him when I got back to town, but he called me before I could leave and gave me a price. I bought it. Finish is rough but the barrels both look good on the inside. I don't know what that finish on the receiver is called. It is tight - no rattles. I don't know how to figure out what the choke is. The mouth of the barrel measures .375. The barrels are 24 inches long. It is missing the little part that slides in the rear sight for vertical adjustment.

Looks like there could be some beautiful wood grain hiding under that muck.

I thought I have one of those, and was interested in the information coming out.
But, mine is a Stevens, Model 22-410 with the Tenite stock. Looks just like the Savage with the same selector.

It looks like someone put some shiny gloss finish over the original factory finish. I’d be of the mind to scrape off that finish and put an oil finish on it. Mark Novak has some good videos on his YouTube channel Anvil.
