Muggs, I recommend the Destroyermen series by Taylor Anderson. Great series about an old destroyer that gets sent through a warp into an alternate world during WWII. Taylor creates a great world and researches everything he includes. He is an avid shooter and re-enactor, and is a good friend of my Son. He lives in the Ft. Worth metroplex area. His characters come alive. I highly recommend it. Also look for anything by Travis S Taylor. Here is a link to Taylor Anderson's Facebook page
https://www.facebook.com/TaylorAndersonAuthor/ and one for Travis S. Taylor. https://www.facebook.com/Travis-S-Taylor-104954772793/ Travis writes mostly Hard SF which I love foremost in the genre.

... a few that come to mind.
Mirrorshades: The Cyberpunk Anthology (1986) edited by Bruce Sterling
Dangerous Visions (1967) and Again Dangerous Visions (1972) edited by Harlan Ellison
Codgerspace (1992) by Alan Dean Foster
A Dry, Quiet War (1996) novelette by Tony Daniel
Phreak Encounter (1986) by Roger MacBride Allen (dated but still a good read)
... also fond of Asimov's "George and Azazel" series.

Anyone read - The Flying Sorcerors by David Gerrold and Larry Niven?
That is a science fiction book that will have your sides splitting from laughter.

Here's a few that I havens seen mentioned:

Military Sci-Fi:
The Hammer' Slammers series of books, also Redliners, and The Seas of Venus by David Drake

A Hymn Before Battle, Gust Front, When The Devil Dances, and Cally's War by John Ringo.
Also- if you like military fiction with a side of porn, Ringo's Ghost series is an entertaining read.

Zombie Apocalypse fiction:
the Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse series by Shawn Chesser

Straight science fiction:
Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson

You guys have covered a lot of what I think of as great sci-fi books. My favorite author is Robert Heinlein. I like most of what he wrote, even the world as myth stories at the end of his life. I thought it was kind of nice to see all of his old heroes brought together. Niven and Pournelle, their collaborations were stronger than their individual works, though their solo work is good too. Footfall and Lucifer's Hammer shared many of the same themes but are both worth reading. Man Plus by Fredric Pohl, A World out of time, also his Heechee novels. The Dune series by Frank Herbert. Half Past Human by T.J. Bass. The Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson. I probably could go on and on.

Depends on what you call sci fi.

I am not a big fan of the fantasy books. Dragonriders, etc.

For Apocalyptic stuff:
Alas, Babylon
Earth Abides
Lights Out (by David Crawford)
Normal
Footfall
Lucifer's Hammer

I like Heinlien and Asimov, but didn't care for Stranger in a Strange Land much. Future history was pretty good.
Dune was good, but didn't care for the prequels or followups.

Ender's Game was good. Haven't read his followups yet.

Don't get started on the Ashes, Deathlands or Survivor series. I loved 'em but they are repetitive. Not cerebral. Just escapism.

I liked David Brin's The Postman

A Canticle for Leibowitz is pretty good

I also liked the "Deep Winter" series by Thomas Sherry. But this is SHTF/EOTW stuff.

World War Z was better as a book than a movie

One Second After (similar to Alas, Babylon) but current time setting

HG Wells

Jules Verne

Just my ramblings.

Dave
