Actually sturmgewehr, or "storm rifle". "Assault rifle" I believe was coined by a guy from......Newtown, Conn.
All semantics at this point. The important thing is that innocent people have lost their lives, families have been devastated, and once again we, the law abiding citizens will be the scape goat and will probably take it in the shorts for clinging to our rights.

"Assault rifle" is a valid translation of sturmgewehr.
"Assault weapon" is the made-up term, and "semi-automatic assault [rifle|weapon]" is just word salad.
