Even Shoplifting can be dangerous...

Augusta, GA

Orville Smith, a store manager for Best Buy in Augusta, Georgia, told police he observed a male customer, later identified as Tyrone Jackson of Augusta, on surveillance cameras putting a laptop computer under his jacket... When confronted the man became irate, knocked down an employee, drew a knife and ran for the door.

Outside on the sidewalk were four Marines collecting toys for the "Toys for Tots" program. Smith said the Marines stopped the man, but he stabbed one of the Marines, Cpl. Phillip Duggan, in the back, the injury did not appear to be severe.

After Police and an ambulance arrived at the scene Cpl. Duggan was transported for treatment. The subject was also transported to the local hospital with two broken arms, a broken ankle, a broken leg, several missing teeth, possible broken ribs, multiple contusions, assorted lacerations, a broken nose and a broken jaw...injuries he sustained when he slipped and fell off of the curb after stabbing the Marine.

Fellow Marines identified the injured man as Cpl. Phillip Duggan, 24. His injury is not believed to be life-threatening.

Orvin Smith, a sales manager at Best Buy, said the assault happened about 1:15 p.m. when a man in his late 30s or early 40s was seen on surveillance videos placing a laptop under his jacket. Store staff asked him to return the merchandise, and that’s when the situation began to escalate, he said.

“He was really irate. A whole lot of energy. We basically tried to get him to let go of a laptop. In doing that, he finally let go of the laptop, ran out the front door, knocked one of my employees down and pulled out a knife so he could make sure he could get out the front door. We were doing Toys for Tots, so there were four Marines out there,” Smith said.

“They clotheslined him, and after that he kind up got up and started swinging a knife around. He stabbed one of the gentlemen in the back. It wasn’t a severe cut, probably a couple of stitches at the most. After that, they subdued him and we held him down until the cops came,” he said.

Smith said that he, a customer and two Marines, restrained the man until Richmond County sheriff's deputies arrived and placed him in handcuffs.

Four Marines in their dress blues and seven volunteers were working in the Best Buy breezeway when the confrontation began inside the store.

Gunnery Sgt. Robert Richie said after loss prevention confronted the man about a theft, he ran to the store’s front doors but not before Duggan pulled him to the ground.

“The guy had the knife and came over the top and got (Duggan) in the back,” Richie said.

The man escaped again but didn’t get far in the parking lot before Richie, several other Marines and members from the loss prevention team tackled him in the parking lot and held him until police arrived.

Gunnery Sgt. Sherry Barrera said Duggan joined his current unit about three months ago. Although she has only had the opportunity to drill with him several times, she had heard wonderful things about him.

“My boss who has served with him before did say he was outstanding Marine,” Barrera said.

Barrera, who also serves as the Toys for Tots coordinator, opted to close operations for the day.

“When a Marine gets injured, we just shut it down, go to the hospital, make sure he’s OK and make sure he gets proper treatment,” she said.
