Way back in 1973 I was stationed at Lowry AFB,,,
For an 11 month training class.
I rented a mobile out in Aurora,,,
So I could live with my wife and child.
There was a public range just about a mile form me,,,
So I got into my Mom's attic,,,
And got out my .22 rifle.
I was quite surprised when my wife (thankfully my ex-wife),,,
Discovered she liked shooting .22 rifles,,,
She was quite good at it.
I got a nice IRS return that year so I bought her a Marlin Model 75,,,
I got it at K-Mart and paid a whopping $65 for it,,,
It came with an el-cheapo 2X scope.
I liked the Model 60 they also had better than the model 75,,,
But it was almost $20 more so I cheaped out.
Anyways, my ex took to shooting like a duck to water,,,
I could line ten 12 gauge shells on the rail,,,
At 50 yards she would clear them,,,
In ten shots from a bench.
Anyways I carved her initial "G" on the forend of the stock,,,
Using a Dremel tool just in front of the sling stud.
We divorced in 1975 and she naturally took her rifle,,,
I never saw either of them again,,,
Until yesterday.
Anyways, I was out and about,,,
And decided to hit the pawn shops in my area,,,
At the second shop I saw a beat up scoped Marlin Model 75.
I really didn't pay any attention to it,,,
Until I noticed someone had ground a Schnabel forend on it,,,
They had removed the wood on the forend just in front of the sling swivel.
There's no way of actually knowing if that was her rifle or not,,,
But the wood that was removed was exactly where I had carved that "G",,,
And they removed exactly the amount that would have been required to erase it.
The pawn shop owner wouldn't tell me who had sold the rifle to him,,,
I seriously doubt it would have been her as last I knew,,,
She moved to Missouri right after the divorce.
For about 1/10th of a second I thought about buying it,,,
But I really have no use for it so I passed,,,
Besides, he wanted $150 for it.
That was 2.3 times what I originally paid,,,
And it was pretty well beat up by now.
Anyhoo,,,
It brought back memories of her,,,
And that itself was enough for me to pass on the rifle.
Like the "Telephone Operator" said,,,
What a ko-inky-dinky.
Only people who remember "Laugh In" will get the reference.
