Steve Lisk's 1971 Hemi Challenger was a Detroit street racing legend. The Black Ghost was/is a fantasy.

There was a 9 second 1/4 car in Stephens county in the late 70’s and early 80’s that was the bad’est car in the county. And he would take on all comers. For real,a 9 second car.

It was a 63 T-Bird and it was the fastest street car I’ve ever seen.

John Johnson was the guy. He was the fastest guy around. He also owned a couple of 350 & 500 mustangs , but they weren’t quicker than his T-Bird.

Nobody that didn’t see it wouldn’t ever believe it.

Back in 2021, I wound up parked across the aisle from the Black Ghost at a multi-day indoor show. Had plenty of time to look the car over, and visit with Greg the owner. I came to the same conclusion as UT as far as the car being a "legendary street racer." There's no way. It's just too stock to run with the heavy hitters back then. Now its a legit Hemi car and no doubt fast compared to most other stock or mildly modified street cars. As long as he picked his races against cars like that, he probably won most of them. But that's not enough to move into the big leagues of street racing, let alone achieve legendary status.
Greg is a nice guy, but not really a car guy. I believe he heard stories about his dad winning races in the car, re-packaged them and built the "legend" from there. I doubt he intended to be deceitful, I suspect he legitimately didn't understand that there are folks who race their cars on the street, and then there are street racers, who take things to another level.
Its a really good story though, and it spread and grew far beyond what I suspect he ever intended. But he buckled up, went along for the ride, and here we are. It'll be interesting to see if the legend starts to deflate a little now that the car is out of the original family's hands, or if its taken on a life of its own at this point.

Edit: Found a photo I took of Greg with his car.

Considering that Holman Moody , Roush , and the car makers themselves Ford, GM and Chrysler were all running one off race cars up and down Woodward Avenue during the mid 60's to 1975 yeah . The Black Ghost is a good story but hardly gospel. Don't get me wrong its a bad ass car and rare but no stock Hemi or 440 is keeping up with the full on race cars which were head hunting Detroit in the 1960's as covert R&D

I think it just sold on Mecum Auction for a lot of moolah $975k this weekend. 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T SE “Black Ghost” . The son sold it and had been stored for years.
They had a lot of hype....... going by my weak memory.

Not 100% sure this is same car.
