Even a short series of visited domains from one subscriber can be sensitive. A pivotal moment in a user’s life, for example, could generate the following log at the user’s ISP (assuming the user hasn’t invested in special privacy tools):
[2015/03/09 18:34:44] abortionfacts.com
[2015/03/09 18:35:23] plannedparenthood.org
[2015/03/09 18:42:29] dcabortionfund.org

I have students take tests at home, sometimes. They get a little upset when I show them what I can get from their IP Address. Then we have a larger discussion about privacy and safety.

Add on top of that most public wifi access points can allow other people to run packet sniffers and figure out not only what you looked at but what you sent as well. All the more reason why I enjoy my VPN setup.

I tried a couple of vpn's and was not happy with them. Some of them have ad's, especially if you don't pay for their premium versions. Also they can really screw up
your computer and are hard to get rid of. Hotspot Shield for instance. If anyone has a good vpn that is not intrusive let us know.

VPN doesn't necessarily protect you from anything. It just means you have a logical private connection between two points on the internet but all your web browsing will appear to come from the other end of the vpn tunnel. So if you vpn to work, your porn surfing will just look like it's coming from your work rather than your home. TOR networks and public VPN offload sites are nothing but collection points for scammers/malware or an easy point for someone to monitor. The reality is that on the internet, no one is safe or hidden or anything of the sort for anyone savy enough with enough time. Don't do anything you wouldn't do if you were in a crowd that might be seen by a random stranger.
