I recently acquired a Springfield 1903 it has been “sporterized?” “Sported?” Has a redfield peep sight stock is in good shape. I have a few questions about them. First what is a sported model worth? And second is a 1903 different from a 1903 a3 it reason I ask that is it came with a Leupold scope mount packaging says 1903 a3 and it only came with 2 screws to mount but the rifle has 3 holes. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Will post pictures if the thread gets answered just haven’t taken any yet. Hope everyone has a great memorial weekend!

Pictures are pretty much a must if you’re asking about value. Gonna need good clear pictures of all markings, images of receiver, stock, etc… as well as full images of both sides of the rifle. Generally a sporterized Springfield or any military rifle for that matter will lose a considerable amount of value unless the work was done by a couple famous gunmakers.

Pics will help a lot and it depends on how well it was done. Most decent ones I have seen lately have been in the $450 to $500 range. A Bubba special can go $150 depending on how chopped up it is.

the 1903a3 has the rear aperture peep sight and the 1903 has a ladder flip up sight in front of the receiver on the barrel. if it is a low serial number receiver the heat treat was questioned and not considered safe. since it has been drilled and tapped it doesn't matter much about the historical value of a complete intact as issued rifle. if the barrel hasn't been cut and the sights removed it would be possible to restore it partially but for value sake probably not worth it. as a shooter with a worn modified military two groove barrel it may or may not be much. take it out at 100 yards and record the data. that way at least you can evaluate it ???

Only markings I see on it are on top of the receiver as shown in pictures. I don’t think it looks bad or “bubbad” lol has a nice cheek rest and shoulder pad but again I don’t know anything about them this is why I am asking.

How would it be marked if it were done by one of these famous gunmakers?

well at least it is above 800000 serial number so you are good there. kind of hard to tell but the barrel is probably original. is it a two groove barrel? what does ot shoot like? and it was a 1903 springfield not an 03a3

That’s why I asked you to take pictures of all markings and post them. 😉 What you have there is a nice little shooter if the headspace checks out. If done by a reputable gunmaker most certainly the rifle would have high grade wood and a beautiful bluing. Here’s a pic of what I’m talking about. This is the stock from one of my Model 12s and would be considered “exhibition grade walnut” or so I’ve been told. Obviously the two screws in the receiver aren’t supposed to be there and can be filled by a competent gunsmith.

I’m completely new to these rifles so you’ll have to excuse the ignorance but when you say 2 groove would you be referring to grooves on top of barrel after the make and model stamp? If so it only has one groove. I’ve yet to shoot the rifle haven’t had much time.
