VFW, DAV, AMVETS, etc. are all qualifying organizations. Retirees and current military members do not need to be a part of one of the organizations to qualify for the CMP purchases.

I don't know if they still are, but the Oklahoma Rifle Association used to be a CMP affiliate. I joined the ORA to qualify for my DCM (now CMP) Garand back in the day.

Do your due diligence and get the most expensive one you can afford. Of course, try to pay as little as possible for it. My thinking is that M1's and 03's, and such, are not gonna get less expensive.

A mosin will be the cheapest to shoot. I'd start with one of them and go from there. my first surplus rifle was a 1917 lithgow enfield when I was 16.
