I did my pre-season maintenance but after yesterday afternoon my second curved shaft Homelite 2 cycle gas trimmer in six years is on the way to the dumpster.

I spent a lot of time pulling on the rope to get it running and when it is hot and dies it's a even bigger pain to start......like my first one it's just tired and so am I.

I've got no complaints for the $120.00 or so I gave for it out the door at Home Depot I feel it's been a good investment.....in it's prime it was always pretty easy to start and the only complaint I ever had with both of them was that the 'bump feed' sometimes gave me fits.

I've got just a normal sized in town yard and my trimmers never see more than a hour of use a week through the mowing season.

What do you think, just go get another Homelite and be done or are there better brand options ?

I have a Stihl that I bought about 9 years ago. It has been great. The primer ball finally got a hole in it this year. Now I need to find someone to replace that, but should be good to go after.

I am going to say it may be the way you are storing it. Have you tried replacing the filter in the tank and fuel and return lines? It could also be you are not mixing the fuel correctly, have you checked the plug?
The only reason I am asking is, you could get a top of the line commercial trimmer and have the same problem.

10 minute job, I would replace the fuel lines and plug at the same time.

For what you are doing I would just get another cheap one. No more than you use it a Stihl may give you fits also. They only have a two year warranty after that runs out it will cost you a hundred dollars to have it looked at.

I have a Stihl handheld blower I bought new. The OM Manual said when you put it way for season to dump the fuel out of the tank and start it up and run it out of fuel. The thing was a month out of warranty when it wouldn't run. I took it in they said crank case seals had dried out so the case wouldn't hold vacumn. Cost 150 bucks to fix it on a 250 dollar blower. The Sthil dealer told me not to pay attention I the manual. It really needed fuel to be kept in it and ran on a regular basis.

Now all my stuff two stroke and four stroke gets pulled out I the shed every couple of months and gets started and ran. I will buy another Stihl but the stuff has be properly maintained or it won't last 3 years either.

With that said. I have been running the same $79 weed eater brand weed eater for, well this will be 14 years. Bought it at pen square Walmart. I have lived on and mowed and weed eated 5 acres since 2007. It never dies. Put fuel lines on it a couple of times. Things starts right up every year.

I would get an ECHO weedeater, preferably straight shaft from Home Depot. with using the choke properly, I am on my 4th season of using it and it starts within three pulls, one to prime, one to mess with the choke (casue I forgot it), the next it starts.

I have used ECHO commercial weed eaters in the past, and the residential unit, has more than enough power to edge, and knock down large weeds.

I love Stihl products and have never had a problem with one. I also use a good oil mix with a built in gas stabilizer, keep my tanks topped off, and start them every so often even during the winter.

Wait, you don't follow the owners manual either?

This is basically what I do also.

Stihl all the way. I don't skimp on lawn equipment as it's not worth my frustration. Plus replacing every 10 years vs ever other year for the cheap stuff pays off in the long run.
