I told some guys the same thing years ago. They told me they weren't gettin outta the water without their truck. I got back in my patrol car & left. I say if you wanna be a fool & ur not hurtin anyone else be a fool. I would like to hear the rest of this story before passin judgement though.

My only thought on this is that people do get hurt when they're fools. I think about the fireman that lost his life in a water rescue just recently.

I cannot imagine any scenario that would require an officer to shoot someone he was sent to assist in getting out of flood water.

That said, I cannot imagine any scenario where someone an officer showed up to assist would attack that same officer.

Not enough info out yet for me to pass judgment on this one but something tells me that there is a REAL interesting story behind all of this.

Idiocracy
KOKI-TV reported that the man who was killed was an assistant pastor of Faith Bible Church in Tulsa. The state highway patrol on Saturday did not immediately return a call from TheBlaze requesting information; a Saturday phone call from TheBlaze to a Faith Bible Church in Tulsa was unanswered.

The second man was arrested for assault and public intoxication, Timmons said. No names have been released.

Timmons said a weapon was recovered from one of the suspects, but it wasn’t immediately known which man had the weapon or whether shots were fired at the troopers.

Neither trooper was injured. And neither had been placed on leave as of Saturday afternoon.

This! Guy I work with saw this just across the street from where we work Thursday night in Lawton: gal in car makes right hand turn into rushing water, and, predictably, her car stalls. When she gets out and starts trying to make her way to higher ground, a deputy sheriff gets out of his car and runs to her aid. He disappears from sight, instantly! Unbeknownest to him, there was a culvert some ten feet wide and six feet deep between him and her (it was the water flowing out of the culvert that drownded the ladies' car and filled the street), and he stepped right in it! He was able to pull himself out--miraculously--only to look across the road and see the woman he'd just tried to help looking back at him, from high ground, as if she was wondering why he'd decided to jump into the damned culvert. Both are lucky to be alive, even though her foolishness almost cost the deputy his life.

He died while trying to save people caught in a flood, not two guys trying to push their truck out of water. Yukonjack was correct in his experience, instruct them to get out of the water, if they refuse, go on about your business as long as their actions won't affect anyone else.

I'm quite sure alcohol and/or drugs were involved, especially where this was located, but I'm also pretty sure the responding trooper wasn't being to accommodating with regards to someone that was probably trying to save property that could very well be his livelihood. I'm sure the trooper was justified defending himself, my concern is his actions that led up to the shooting.

I did not think the state of Oklahoma had the right to protect you from yourself, provide you were endangering anyone else. Thus, if you drove your car into high water and want to try and push it out, the police cannot prevent you from trying.
Regardless, OHP in the right or wrong, you do not have the the right to attack them.

Except that your own stupid actions can and will lead to people HAVING to rescue your ass... firedogs don't have a choice - if someone is doing something stupid and ends up in trouble (i.e.,carried away by rushing water), then rescue efforts must be made, not just turn your head and walk away and say, "Well, they chose it"... those in Emergency Services are required to try to save the lives of even morons. Which puts their lives at risk. So it's a public safety issue.

I guess if you want to let people do stupid stuff that will result in their death and then say they have no expectation that anyone will try to save them, then fine. For now, though, public safety is about more than choosing to risk your OWN life... you could be risking the lives of your rescuers, too.
