Was reading a comment earlier related to the various proposals for the state budget. One was promoting the legalization of pot, and said that since we now had legal tattoos, we could become in sync with the rest of the civilized world.

That got me thinking about tattoos. I don't have a feeling one way or the other. I have two daughters, one with, one without.

So my question is; What is the attraction? Why spend the money?

To some, Tats are a way of dealing with issues, a way of healing. Many folks with PTSD have Tats of events, friends, KIAs, etc. I cannot speak to the social prospectus and trends. To some, the pain of the Tat and the picture/design/words is a type of therapy. I personally have no opinion either way, but many men I know have Tats and every Tat to them has a meaning.

I am the only person in my family without a tattoo, even after 20 years in the Navy and numerous near-death experiences I still have no desire to attach myself to a tattoo forever. My wife and kids have them but they are what I would consider artsy-fartsy folk and I look like a homeless bum.

The answer, who knows...

Excellent answer. Thank you for not responding with a snartazz answer. As I said, I truly do not have an opinion, but had never asked anyone about their motivation.

I think they go with a look/personality.
I like them on some women...not on others.
I have none but dont have that "look" to pull one off IMO.

I do think if you're going to get one...design it yourself (or be instrumental in the design)...dont pick one off the wall or from a book.

I don't have any, but don't mind them on folks, as long as they're not on the neck and face, then that starts to look like prison tats. Didn't really like them in my younger years, but I've mellowed on them as I age. One of my Dr's RN nurse has a full sleeve done. Very colorful, definitely bordering on art. She's probably late 30's, married with kids. Sweet, as normal as could be. Intelligent, can carry on a conversation. I would have stereotyped her in my youth. Glad I've learned a bit thru the years.

That's a great answer. Who knows why people get them. I throw money at guns I don't need, who am I to critique folks throwing their money at tats.?

I'm from the generation where only criminals and Navy folks had tats.
Told my kids growing up that if they got any, I'd cut them out with a dull knife and meant it.
Once they got of age, it became their decisions.
Don't and won't have any, but I do believe that your body is your possession and if you want them, its your choice. Still don't like them, but won't disagree with anybody of age getting them.
